How to plan a food photography shoot

A practical brief for turning your menu into a focused, useful set of brand images.

Start with where the images will live

Before choosing props, list the formats you need: menu images, website banners, delivery listings and vertical social content. Each placement needs a different composition. Leave space for text where a campaign or website layout needs it, and capture a clean product view alongside the styled shots.

Choose a focused shot list

Pick the products that best explain your offer. Include a signature item, a useful range of menu categories and the details that make your food distinctive. Group shots by preparation and set so the kitchen and production team can work through them in a clear order.

Bring the brand into the brief

Share your palette, packaging, audience and references. Decide whether the visual direction should feel lively, refined, comforting or bold. Keep the styling connected to the food and location, rather than adding props that compete with the product.

Plan the handover

Agree on image dimensions, crops, file formats and usage before the shoot. Keep a simple asset list showing which images belong to each product and where they will be used. A well-planned shoot leaves your team with content it can publish across several touchpoints.
